Charli XCX and A.G. Cook Ignite the FWB Festival with a Dynamic Birthday DJ Set

Updated: Oct 13, 2023

When the chance to cover FWB Fest was presented to me 6 months ago, I thought to myself "What in the world is this mysterious festival"? For having such recognizable music talents, it was peculiar that I'd never heard of the event. While unusual, there was no way I would pass up on such interesting opportunity. FWB was pitched to me as a shindig celebrating "new ideas, music, and culture." Right then and there, I was hooked on the whole idea, even if it meant I had to hit the road and travel across the whole country to be there.

Set against the esoteric backdrop of Idyllwild, California, this past weekend provided an enthralling plunge into the enigmatic world of the FWB Festival. While there are incredible music acts, the fest is also about arts, community, crypto, and discussions on the future of internet culture. It is an opportunity like no other to get a sneak peak on what we might see in the future of the technology. As for the music, the lineup was an assembly of pure brilliance, stoking anticipation for an array of genius performers.

Amid the festival's unfolding, a surprising twist awaited as Charli's name emerged alongside producer A. G. Cook. In the realm of Tonitruale, Charli XCX reigns as a household name, symbolizing our adoration for pioneering pop icons. You can imagine that my delight was palpable when her last-minute addition was announced. Their collaborative birthday DJ set did more than just heighten the event's excitement; it beckoned curiosity among Charli XCX's online fans, enticing them to delve into the enigmatic essence of the festival.

If you're scratching your head, don't sweat it – the covert nature of FWB Fest is to blame. With a strict guest list of just 1,000 people, it's no wonder this underground phenomenon flew under the radar. FWB Fest operates in stealth mode even with its star-studded lineup. It is no surprise that tickets sold out almost instantly after Charli’s surprise set was announced. The limited attendance turns performances into treasured secrets, a whispered tale shared among the lucky few. But... I was there, and I’d like to fill you in.

Charli's collaboration with the pioneering producer A. G. Cook has been a cornerstone of her musical journey since he assumed the role of her creative director back in 2016. Together, they've sparked a pop revolution that's redefined innovation in music. Despite her prior experience in electronic music, the revelation that she would co-DJ the set was a surprise that rippled through the festival's attendees.

With Cook at the helm, Charli injected the performance with her trademark exuberance, occasionally taking the solo DJ reins herself. Their set was a captivating blend of tracks that spanned a spectrum of styles. Naturally, the remix of "911" was on the playlist, as was the Barbie Girl Remix from the recent blockbuster "Barbie" movie. Adding to the excitement, the duo also unveiled a couple of new tracks during the set. These teasers have piqued the interest of fans who eagerly anticipate possible new releases, eagerly tracking the evolution of this dynamic duo.

In the midst of this dynamic musical collaboration, Charli XCX and A. G. Cook showcased a synergy that was nothing short of captivating. Their history of innovation together, from Cook's role as her creative director to their hyper-pop revolution, set the stage for a truly unforgettable set at FWB Fest. Charli's star power and Cook's musical prowess were like two halves of a whole. Despite Charli's status as a global superstar, the set felt incredibly intimate, as if they were performing just for those lucky enough to be in attendance. Charli XCX and A. G. Cook undoubtedly form a duo that sparks creativity and excitement in equal measure.

By the end of the night, I found myself raving to the duo from just step or two behind them in the booth. Charli's high energy was amazing, even as she continuously danced back into me, or swayed her hair into my face. In fact, I have never been more accepting of such a situation. It was honor to enjoy the set at such close quarters, and it still feels like an unreal experience. It won't be the last time I see a set from Charli and Cook, but this will always be the most spectacular, wild, and mind-blowing experience.
