Wolf Alice Debuts Serene Single, 'The Sofa' Ahead of Upcoming Record, 'The Clearing'

Opening instantly with a gentle guitar which soothingly guides us to a lulling bass line, ‘The Sofa’ feels like a long needed and cherished hug. The quickness of the lyrics in the prechorus with the accompanying rhythm, of course complimented by frontwoman Ellie Rowsell’s heavenly vocals give the track an extra layer of allure and captivation. It only continues to build further, as if we’re floating towards a ceiling we’ll never hit, with the piano echoing behind Rowsell’s passive lamenting.
‘The Sofa’ is the second single following ‘Bloom Baby Bloom’ off Wolf Alice’s upcoming fourth record, The Clearing, set to release on August 22 of this year. It contrasts the more theatrical nature of the premiere single and has a calmer quality, though not at all to mean less interesting. It has a similar sound to many of the tracks on Wolf Alice’s third record Blue Weekend, with a certain slow jazzy flare to it not before expressed.
It feels loud and large, yet somehow simultaneously quiet and serene— showing the contrast between a domestic life and one of a faster nature. In describing this, Rowsell describes,
“It’s about not trying so hard to figure everything out, reflecting on getting older and trying not to agonize over things that have or haven’t happened in your life. It’s also about trying to get to grips with the polarizing aspects of one’s life when you’re in a band. You’ve just played a huge tour - and you come home, and you have your dinner on the sofa. For me, it’s summed up in how I treat TV. I used to never watch the same thing twice because I thought I’ve got so much to discover! And now I’m like, it's okay if I just want to rewatch Peep Show for the thirteenth time."
